Gut’N a N Front Mount COIL, To add a external round can coil

Start by removing the four push/pin rivets from the top, these are spiraled and will self unscrew when a little force is applied to the under side of the cap. I spec there are some that have a screw driver slot so use the slot to un screw the retain’n pins.

Lift the top cover and cut the thin wire from the primary connection as close to the coil as possible

Now the fun begins. The ones I have gutted have been filled with Tar, I use a hair dryer or heat gun and heat the coil case, the tar will melt. Remove as much as possible so you can remove the coil with out damaging the lead that goes to the tab on the bottom side. Cut that leads off as close to the coil as possible.

I then soak the coil case over night in a can of gas or mineral sprits, gas works best. If the case is not cracked you can fill the case with gas and let it soak. Next day with a brush clean the case spic and span.

I use Muratic acid and clean the two wires left hanging in the coil base and the one wire in the coil cap.

I use a 3ft length of copper core plug wire and solider it to the wire that connects to the front flat tab of the coil base on the inside. Some do not leave you much to deal with so I strip the copper core plug wire about 2” and spiral the naked copper wire around a nail to make a springy look’s lead. I place it all the way down in the cavity of the coil base and solider. After it cools do a pull test, if you were lucky enuff to have plenty to wire to work with no need to push the coil wire lead all the way down. I pack dielectric Tune-Up grease around the lead all the way down to the base, don’t B skeered more is better. Now drill you hole in the cap for the coil wire.

Next solider a 8 to 10” 14/16 gauge automotive electric wire to the center springy looking thingy. If you plan the reuse the original gasket install it now, Clean, strip and coil the same as you did the coil wire. Solider it to the cap terminal wire. Coat with Dielectric Tune-Up Grease. Permatex part # 22058 you can find it at a automotive parts store.

This step is optional, fill ½ to ¾ full of 100% silicon. If you ever need to go back into it gas will dissolve the silicon, the dielectric grease will keep the silicon from sticking to the wires and protect it from the silicon and moisture.

Install the cap, seal the coil wire, tap the rivets back in.

If you are using a 12V system get a NAPA IC14SB coil, wire it direct no resistor needed.

If you are 6Vs use a 6V coil no resistor needed, sorry don’t know the part # but a coil for a 50 to 52 8N side mount coil is what you need. No resistor needed. No special points are condenser needed.

You will have to use your imagination and mount and wire the replacement 12 or 6v coil. I have seen a picture of a replacement coil that had been filled with a hard plastic filler. Once the top of the coil was dug out a little the wires for the connections were exposed and no need to dig out the old coil. Just trace and connect. You will need a boot to go over the coil wire and over the top terminal of the replacement coil and a brass end to go on the coil wire. These parts come in a elcheap-o plug wire kit # CPN-12259 sold at farm and fleet or you favorit tractor parts store. 12 to 15 bucks. Comes with all the parts needed to rewire your ignition and a few extra parts. Strip the coil wire about ½ to expose the copper strain, once I cut the insulation I twist it so it will twist the copper strain then while twisting it of. Use a needle to open up the hole in the brass clip and push the copper strain threw it. Solider the copper strain to the brass clip, Cut off access This is important cause most plug wire problems are from a bad connection at the plug wire ends. Lube with Dielectric grease install till it locks firmly in the

IGNITION COIL Cross Reference Numbers - IG-110

This information is posted in the interest of local source and possibly saving some money. The spark coil required for the non-ballasted MG ignition system is a common type widely used around the world. These should be available at any local auto parts store, and lots of other kinds of motorized equipment dealers. This is an extensive list of coils that do not require a ballast resistor and can be installed with no modifications necessary to the wiring harness.

Beware that prices vary considerably. I bought a NAPA IC64 coil in April 2004, list price $62.50 discounted to $40.00. NAPAonline.com lists IC14SB for a meager $17.99 (April 2007). When I needed one for my lawn tractor I found a John Deere AT10399 on-line for $14.95, and it works just as well in an MG. Maximum voltage output could be anywhere from 17,000 volts nominal with a small spark plug gap up to 55,000 volts with a large plug gap and high output coil. There will be far more part numbers that are not listed here, as I have not listed all of the auto manufacturers (missing Ford and GM and MG for instance)
